Phosphors are used for lighting and displays. High brightness phosphors are needed to reduce energy consumption. It is estimated that lighting makes up ~20% of the total electrical use in the United States. The energy saving potential is significant with the use of high efficiency lamps and new technologies such as light-emitting diode (LED) lighting.
